Tree Work Case Study – Diseased Beech Tree Removal

Introduction

A large diseased Beech tree that is located in a central part of the school grounds requires removal to ground level.

Our Client’s Aim

The tree to be removed is partly overhanging the school building and partly overhanging an area of newly laid artificial grass. The client required assurance that there would be no damage caused to the school buildings or the artificial grass during the removal of this tree. We also had a small window of 2 days to complete the works, due to it being a prominent area of the school with high usage.

Our Proposal

  • Due to the size and location of the tree, and the requirement not to cause any damage to the surrounding area, we deployed the use of a crane to aid the dismantling and removal of this tree.
  • A large 26m reach Mobile Elevated Work Platform was used to reach the crown of the tree and to undertake all aerial chainsaw cutting to dismantle the tree in sections. Using a MEWP provided greater efficiency to accessing the crown using a rope and harness.
  • The crane was used to carefully lift the cut sections of tree to an area out of the way, where it could be broken down and processed through the wood chipper. This allowed for larger sections of the tree to be dismantled, with less risk of damaging the surrounding area.
  • All branches less than 20cm in diameter were fed through a wood chipper with the arisings blown into our 7.5ton lorry and taken to our depot, to be later taken to a local biomass power plant.
  • All wood greater than 20cm in diameter was neatly stacked using our Avant Loader to be later collected and removed from site using a 20ton Unimog.

Result

The tree was safely removed to ground level without any damage caused to the surrounding area. The area around the tree, and the area where the branches were processed, was thoroughly tidied using a rake and back-pack blower.
