Stump Grinding – Tree in poor health and causing damage

Tree in poor health and causing damage to the road, footpath and BT cabinet.

Our client’s aim

To remove the tree and, more difficultly, the stump so that the road and footpath could be repaired and made safe for its users.

Our proposal

  • The tree removal was straight forward and the tree was reduced to 1m above ground level after one day’s work with 3 operatives working under traffic management.
  • As the stump had grown into the tarmac road and footpath, causing the tarmac to lift above ground level, getting the stump to below ground level was going to be difficult.
  • Our client suppled another contractor to break up the tarmac around the stump and then used a Vac-Ex to vacuum the soil around the stump, allowing us to access with our stump grinder.
  • Our stump grinder has a vertical rotating blade with hammer-type teeth which pulverizes the stump into wood chip. The blade can then be maneuvered left and right, and up and down, to slowly grind out the stump. We have multiple sized stump grinders with 15hp, 50hp and 100hp.

Result

The tree was removed and the stump ground out to just below ground level to allow the road and footpath to be repaired. This work has to be undertaken slow, methodically and with great care so not to cause damage to the surrounding environment, and our machine.
